Working across party lines for sustainability in local politics - the Compass Group
Steve Williams, Green Party activist, borough councillor and portfolio holder for Environment & Sustainability on the Executive of Waverley Borough Council.
As Vice-Chair of South West Surrey Compass, a cross-party alliance for a more equal, democratic and sustainable society, Steve is a passionate advocate of progressive cross-party collaboration and proportional representation. By collaborating beyond party lines and coming together to achieve progressive goals, positive change can happen.
"So we’ve declared a climate emergency… What next? Waverley Borough Council declared a climate emergency in September 2019. In the session, I will outline some the challenges of local authorities trying to get to net zero carbon by 2030 and mitigate against the impact of climate change already happening. This talk and interactive session will cover some of what one council's progressive cross-party administration at Waverley Borough Council, has done to date in the face of the climate crisis, and the challenges which lie ahead." - Steve Williams
After Steve's talk, we will split up into smaller groups for a mini "citizen's assembly" to think about some solutions to current issues facing our local community, together.
